iKhaya Ginger Beer Powder (500gr)
iKhaya Ginger Beer Powder (500gr)
Art. nr. B25382
Product Description
Making ginger beer has never been this easy! The great tasting ginger beer we all know and love, reinvented in an almost-instant form that is super-easy to brew and, best of all, proudly made in South Africa! Simply add the powder to 5 litres of luke-warm water and let stand for 48 hours or until the ginger beer has developed to your taste. Initially the ginger beer will still be fairly sweet, and it will become drier (and more alcoholic) as it stands longer. While this ginger beer is excellent when enjoyed young, you can also let it ferment out completely, add beer finings, then bottle it along with carbonation drops and let it mature further until it becomes fizzy. (In that case you should treat your brewing equipment and bottles with a no-rinse sanitizer solution to prevent long-term spoilage.) Typical alcohol by volume: +/- 4% (if fermented out completely). Makes 5 litres.

Brew for Africa PH Test Strips For Coloured Solutions (20s)
Brew for Africa PH Test Strips For Coloured Solutions (20s)
Art. nr. B01332
Product Description
These indicator strips are a quick and easy way to measure the pH (acidity) of coloured solutions (such as wort) and are therefore suitable for establishing the pH of the mash during brewing. Other pH testing strips are difficult to use for brewing, because the wort causes discolouration of the indicator pads and thereby false readings. These strips have the reference bands incorporated on the strip itself, which means that both the indicator area and the reference bands are subject to the same amount of discolouration, so they still provide a reliable reading. The pH range of these strips runs from 5.5 to 3.8 in steps of 0.3. For most beers the ideal pH range of the mash is generally considered to be 5.2 to 5.4 For more details see the instruction manual.

Product Description
Dextrin malt gives a fuller body and mouthfeel to light beer styles (e.g. Pilsner, lager or Bock) and significantly improves head formation and retention. Use in small quantities (typically 3-5%), as it can cause a cloying, sugary sweetness if used in excess. This is a crystal malt which can be steeped and does not need mashing (but can be mashed along with other base malts). However, when steeped this malt may introduce unconverted starches in the wort. Most of these may disappear during boiling, but your mileage may vary. Product Description
Biscuit malt is unique among malts. Along with the American Briess Victory® malt, for which it is an excellent replacement, this is the only base malt that can also be steeped in small quantities to lend a wonderful malty character to extract-based brews. Biscuit malt is a Belgian malt, so it is excellently suited to give many Belgian ales their typical character, but it also works brilliantly in many English and American ales. This lightly kilned malt is known for its lovely sweetish biscuit-like aroma and flavour, and after crystal malt this is perhaps the most frequently used speciality malt. Can be used as an excellent substitute for American Briess Victory® malt. Biscuit malt can be steeped in small quantities, or mashed along with base malts, typically making up 15% or so of the total grain bill.

Homebrew South Africa Brew Buddy Single Vessel Full-Grain Brewing System
Homebrew South Africa Brew Buddy Single Vessel Full-Grain Brewing System
Art. nr. B11266
Product Description
This affordable entry-level single vessel brewing system is an easy way to get started with full grain beer brewing. The Brew Buddy uses the "Brew in a Bag" method. Grains are steeped in the full volume of water to be used for the brew, and no sparging is needed. But that is not all it can do! The Brew Buddy can also be used for brewing beers from extract and steeped grains, as well as for the more traditional mash-and-sparge method. Should you decide to move on to a more advanced brewing set-up, the Brew Buddy can easily be made part of any traditional three-vessel system.

Note: like any other full grain brewing system, the Brew Buddy produces wort. In order to ferment that wort into beer you will need a separate fermentation vessel (not included) as well as the other brewing implements included in our Starter Brewery Sets.

The Brew Buddy includes:
  • 25 litre food grade plastic brewing bucket with food grade plastic tap
  • 30 x 45 cm food grade nylon mesh liner (fits the bucket precisely)
  • 230V / 2300W heating element with over-temperature protection
  • 65cm regulation kettle cord with 3 prong South African plug
  • Copper immersion chiller with 5-turn coil (ca. 6 x 26cm), 3/8" tubing, fitted with 1/2" BSP threaded connectors that match standard domestic plumbing accessories including "Gardena® type" hosepipe adaptors (hosepipe connector set available from Brew For Africa)
  • Comprehensive instruction manual

Product Description

This complete starter brewery set contains everything you need to start brewing excellent beers, including the ingredients for your first batch (no-boil, kit brewing: choose the Brew Can you want by including the name in the Remarks field when ordering). Homebrew South Africa H10 - Vodka / Dry Gin Distilling Yeast
Homebrew South Africa H10 - Vodka / Dry Gin Distilling Yeast
Art. nr. B11391
New!
Product Description
This professional distilling yeast is especially suited for the fermentation of glucose, dextrose and starch-derived washes (e.g. maize or wheat) for the production of vodkas and other neutral spirits, but also gives good results in the fermentation of grain-based washes e.g. barley, wheat, rye) for the production of dry gins. (Use our H15 Whisky/Gin yeast for smoother, less dry gins.) It has a very neutral and clean flavour profile with extremely low levels of higher alcohols and congeners. It is suitable for high stress fermentations with high starting gravities, can deal with high fermentation temperatures and has a very high alcohol tolerance (>16% ABV). Note: this yeast is less suitable for the fermentation of sucrose / table sugar bases washes (use our T520 Turbo Yeast for that), cane or molasses (for which we recommend our H78 Rum Yeast). Use of a good yeast nutrient in the fermentation of sugar washes is recommended. (Datasheet available for download.)

Homebrew South Africa H31 Classic Ale Yeast
Homebrew South Africa H31 Classic Ale Yeast
Art. nr. B11357
Product Description
This EDME strain of yeast, which originates from the UK, is one of the oldest dried yeast strains on the market. If a recipe from the 1970s or 1980s specifies to use one or two packets of "beer yeast" or "brewing yeast", this is the yeast to use. This classic strain produces semi-sweet to sweet, full-bodied beers with a subtle and restrained fruity character. It is excellently suited for a variety of styles that call for a certain amount of residual sugars to balance against a high alcohol level. Excellently suitable for strong, medium sweet to sweet full-bodied dégustation beers such as Belgian strong ales, Belgian and English barley wines, Scottish strong ales as well as sweet and Imperial stouts, spiced beers, "winter warmers", Christmas ales and a wide variety of English ales. The yeast of choice for historic recipes such as gruit ales, heather ales, recreations of medieval to 19th century ales, cask ales and real ales.

Similar to: Fermentis S-33, WLP005, EDME

Attenuation: low. Flocculation: low to medium. Fruity esters: high. Fermentation temperature: 12-28°C (recommended: 20-24°C for optimum flavour balance). Alcohol tolerance: 12% ABV. For 25 L. (Datasheet available for download.)

Homebrew South Africa T520 - Turbo Yeast (170gr.)
Homebrew South Africa T520 - Turbo Yeast (170gr.)
Art. nr. B11374
Product Description
T520 is a universal turbo yeast. Its new formulation (for improved performance and ease of use) will reliably ferment 5 kilograms of white table sugar (sucrose) or 5.5kg of brewing sugar (dextrose) in a 20 litre sugar wash. The best results are achieved with dextrose.

Fermentation will typically take place in five days while still producing a clean flavoured spirit. However, the speed of fermentation depends on the temperature. The recommended range is 20-30°C. At the low end of the temperature range the fermentation will take more time but will produce a cleaner spirit, while at the high end of the temperature range the fermentation may complete in a few days but will produce a spirit less neutral in flavour. Unlike most other turbo yeasts, T520 lends little or no "hot", sharp or harsh character to the alcohol produced but creates a spirit with an agreeable flavour profile.

Home Bru'ing By Frank Van Wensveen
Home Bru'ing By Frank Van Wensveen
Art. nr. B02296
Product Description
Brewing your own beer at home is a great hobby that is quickly gaining popularity in South Africa. However, most brewing literature and recipes (including those found in abundance on the World Wide Web) have been written by American authors, for an American audience, assuming that American grains, adjuncts, hops and yeasts will be used to brew American interpretations of the various beer styles.

This book focuses primarily on the South African home brewer. It explains the basics as well as the more advanced aspects of brewing, based on what the average South African home brewer has available to start out with. Where necessary, specific references to the South African market for brewing ingredients and accessories have been included. Whenever calculations are being discussed, the formulas have been adjusted for metric units, i.e. they use kilograms and litres rather than pounds, ounces, gallons and such.

Combining the practical basics of home brewing with just enough of the principles behind them, this book should give the beginning home brewer not only a basic set of brewing skills but also the essential background required to understand why things need to be done in this way or that. This makes this book especially suited for use as a teaching aid for brewing courses and the like.

See the Table of Contents for an overview of subjects discussed.
